INSTRUCTIONS FOR REFILLING CANON BC-62 PHOTO INK TANK
NOTE:  THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT METHODS OF REFILLING THE BC-62 TANK.  READ THROUGH BOTH AND DETERMINE WHICH IS BEST FOR YOUR PARTICULAR NEEDS
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU REFILL CARTRIDGE BEFORE COMPLETELY RUNNING OUT OF INK.
SPONGE MATERIAL MAY DRY IF LEFT WITHOUT INK FOR ANY PERIOD OF TIME

COLOR BC-62:  new: 3x7cc  Cyan/Magenta/Yellow
PHOTO COLORS: new: 3x12cc Photo Cyan/Photo Magenta/ Photo Yellow
COLOR BC-62:  Refilling: 3x5cc  Cyan/Magenta/Yellow (Average)
PHOTO COLOR:  Refilling: 3x9cc  Photo Cyan/ Photo Magenta/ Photo Yellow (Average)
Number of refills:  5 minimum / 10 maximum.  During testing of this cartridge most users who refilled once every 3 months or less received as many as 10 refills before requiring a new cartridge.   Users who took longer than 5 months usually received 5-6 refills.

Due to the nature of the sponge inside it is recommended that you refill these cartridges before completely running out of ink.   It is good practice to fill all three colors when one is about to go dry.  The procedure of topping off cartridges will allow the cartridge sponge to stay moist and retain ink longer.

NOTE:  There are two different refilling methods that you can use to refill the BC-62 cartridge.  Both of the methods have been tested and work over the life of the ink tank.  The BOTTOM FILL method allows you to refill without violating the cartridge, where the TOP FILL method has you removing the label at the top of the cartridge and enlarging original ink injection holes before refilling.  Our preferred method is the TOP FILL method since it allows you to inject ink into the cartridge quicker and it allows you to inject more ink than the BOTTOM FILL method.

BEFORE
Before you get started here are some suggestions for getting the most from the refilling process while maintaining a clean, usable work area.

  1. Work close to or over a sink.  Wear rubber gloves and place an adequate amount of newspaper over work area.
  2. Have prepared for use a cup of warm water and several paper towels.
  3. Be patient.  The first time you refill it will seem awkward.  After a few times it will become second nature.

THE REFILL PROCESS BOTTOM FILL

  1. Set your cartridge down on a secure level surface with the ink exit hole facing up.
  2. Apply injector tip to injector by twisting until secure.
  3. Standard Colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) Fill injector to 6 cc with desired color ink.  Photo Color (Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Photo Yellow)  Fill injector to 9 cc with desired color ink
  4. REMOVE the injector tip from the injector.
  5. Hold injector over appropriate exit hole and apply a small amount of pressure to the plunger.
  6. Allow a drop or two of ink to be released from the injector.
  7. This sponge readily absorbs ink .  Under repeated testing it took approximately 15-18 seconds to dispense 1CC of ink.
  8. When completed return any unused ink to the bottle.
  9. Rinse injector with warm water. (please see note above regarding hard water))
  10. Wipe off any residual ink from area surrounding the ink  exit holes.  Do not touch the sponge material.
  11. Allow to sit several minutes before return to printer.
  12. NOTE: once installed into printer allow to sit several minutes so that ink can settle properly.
  13. Run a print test.

THE REFILL PROCESS TOP FILL

  1. Set your cartridge down on a secure level surface with the ink exit hole facing up.  Apply a piece of adhesive tape along the three exit holes of the cartridge.
  2. Turn cartridge over so that it is facing label up.  Scrape or peel back label to expose original ink fill holes.
  3. Using the supplied 'twist tool' enlarge the ink  fill holes so that the injector can be inserted. In between chambers clean twist tool thoroughly.
  4. Apply injector tip to injector by twisting until secure.
  5. Standard Colors (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow) Fill injector to 6 cc with desired color ink.  Photo Color (Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta, Photo Yellow)  Fill injector to 9 cc with desired color ink
  6. Insert the injector tip into cartridge chamber as far as it can go and then pull back 1/8th of an inch.
  7. This sponge readily absorbs ink .  Under repeated testing it took approximately 7-8 seconds to dispense 1CC of ink.
  8. If you are injecting slowly enough into cartridge bubble will begin to show at top of cartridge when saturation point is near.  Wait several seconds and then slowly remove injector.
  9. Return any unused ink to the bottle.
  10. Rinse injector with warm water. (please see note above regarding hard water))
  11. Wipe off any residual ink from surrounding area .
  12. Seal fill hole with supplied seals.
  13. Repeat for other colors if desired
  14. Once completed remove tape from bottom of cartridge and install into printer.
  15. Run a print test.
WHAT TO KNOW
Due to nature of the sponge material, it is common that after 8 refills that the sponge begin to deteriorate. There are many factors involved in why the sponge will deteriorate.  How long it takes is partially up to you.  Here are some guidelines to protecting your cartridge and getting the most from it.
  1. Refill the cartridge immediately upon running out of ink, or as soon as the ink level becomes low.
  2. Do not let cartridge sit out of a printer longer than necessary.  Too much air is not beneficial to the sponge material.
  3. Expect the inevitable:  Cartridges will eventually cease to work.  Have an extra cartridge on hand.  All printer manufacturers recommend this as well.  It is just good practice to keep a new cartridge available at all times.

PRIMER PAGES
Primer pages can be used to assist in clearing blockage in a print head, or simply for 'priming' the cartridge.  The purpose is to force ink, air and blockage out of the cartridge.
To create primer pages simple follow the instructions below.

  1. Photo Primer Page:  Using a paint or draw program create three blocks down the length of the page as shown in the diagram to the right titled 'Photo Primer'.  Each of the block should be in the primary ink jet colors (Cyan, Magenta and Yellow)  and Photo Colors (Photo Cyan, Photo Magenta and Photo Yellow) Cover as much of the page as you can without overlapping colors.
  2. To Use.  Just print the page!  Print as many pages as is necessary to get the ink flowing properly.
STORING
Shelf Life:  24 months (2 years)
